People commonly use the terms holistic and naturopathic interchangeably, but there’s a difference between them. Understanding that difference can assist you to make the best choice in your healthcare journey. Both naturopathic and holistic approach shares the tradition and belief that looking for the root cause of illness to heal persons in mind, body, the spirit is the natural and effective way. Both are considered to be “holistic.” Although the path to medical tests and the therapies rendered may vary between the two, naturopaths and homeopaths share the belief that, if given the appropriate attention and care, the bodies can heal themselves.
Holistic, as it is typically described, is a form of healing that considers the whole person—body, mind, spirit, and emotions– when helping an individual have an optimally healthy life. Holistic specialists believe the goal of health is not to defeat disease, but to achieve a well-balanced life in those areas.
The terms “homeopath” and “naturopath” imply various things in different states and different countries. A practitioner of the naturopathic approach of healing is known as a naturopathic physician. A naturopathic physician may practice homeopathy along with other alternative modalities or approaches, such as acupuncture, massage, essential oils, diet, and nutrition. Homeopathy is only one of some therapy modalities used by naturopathic physicians to address your health problems.
Holistic practitioners think that the whole person is made up of interdependent parts from each area—body, mind, spirit, and emotions which if one part is not working correctly, all the other parts will be affected. For that reason, if one area of your life is out of balance– for example, your diet and nutritional intake, then that imbalance impacts or weakens the other areas of your life also.
Naturopathy, as it is typically described, is the practice of emphasizing the prevention of disease by assessing risk factors, susceptibility, and heredity to illness, and then by making appropriate interventions to prevent health problem. These interventions typically involve natural or alternative methods of therapy, such as nutrition, exercise, massage, acupuncture, herbs, essential oils, and supplements.
The holistic approaches used by homeopaths and naturopaths are unique. Homeopaths typically conduct an extensive intake which includes a person’s detailed health history. Homeopath tends to ask open-ended questions designed to motivate the person to describe not only their health problem or discomfort but to describe it in great detail, consisting of the time leading up to the health problem or pain and events, food and encounters around the illness. After the initial visit, which may last up to some hours, homeopaths use that information and people’s responses to find an appropriate remedy.
Naturopathic physicians, on the other hand, reach a conclusion carrying out a comprehensive, thorough person’s history and a proper physical examination, much like a standard or allopathic doctor might do. Based on the info they receive, they might order additional tests, such as imaging or labs, to rule out or rule in tests. When tests are determined, then they create a personalized therapy plan for the person.
For many holistic doctors and physicians, holism implies having a whole-person view. Instead of seeing only an assortment of physical symptoms to heal, they see a “whole” person to address. That person doesn’t have an illness or series of symptoms in their office. That person has a life, family, play, work, hobbies, and relationships and engages within a rich psychosocial context. How well they interact and how their different systems—mind, body, emotions, and spirit—are well balanced determines their health level.
They believe in bacteria, germs, fungi, and all the essential things that a conventional medical doctor does. Still, they also think that an imbalance in any of those four systems can weaken the whole person and permit an illness to enter. They believe that people are unique and that a person’s cultural background and unique psychology also determine how they react to physical illness, medical advice, and therapy.
Physicians who understand these systems and how each person is uniquely structured and created will likely be effective at helping the person develop a well-balanced system.
Naturopathic doctors recover naturally, utilizing natural methods consisting of herbs, essential oils, and various techniques, including acupuncture, massage, nutrition, diet, and holistic solutions. Yet their effective skill remains in educating people about how to care for their health through the decisions, way of life, and options they make.
First and foremost, naturopaths believe in the recovery power of nature, a belief that the body has an inherent capability to restore and maintain health. Naturopathic doctors facilitate this healing process by removing obstacles to cure and identifying therapies to enhance recovery.
By addressing and identifying the cause of the health problem, Naturopathic physicians remove the root of the problem rather than recover the symptoms of the illness. Symptoms are an external manifestation of internal imbalances and are not the illness itself. When only the therapies are resolved, the disease continues to destroy the body’s system. While symptom management is essential, it is vital to address or eliminate the underlying cause of the disease.
A naturopathic therapy plan utilizes therapies that are gentle, noninvasive, effective, and do not have adverse side effects. A conscious effort is made to use techniques that do not suppress symptoms so that the therapy’s impact may be evaluated.
The primary role of naturopathic doctors is not to dispense herbs and nutrition advice or to tell a person what to do. Their role is also that of an educator. They strive to empower, educate, and motivate people to assume more personal responsibility for their health. Educating people is more effective than merely healing them.
Address the whole person: Naturopathic doctors recognize specific weaknesses or dysfunctions in their patients and tailor therapy based on the patient’s particular presentation. The patient needs therapy, not the disease state or symptom. Naturopathic doctors are interested in finding and addressing characteristic symptoms that define the person rather than common symptoms that define the disease.
It is far cheaper and easier to avoid disease than to deal with an illness. Naturopathic doctors examine both subjective and objective information necessary to uncover potential susceptibilities to future disease states in their persons. They can discuss a specific way of life methods or nutritional supplementation as a means for disease prevention.
Homeopathy is a gentle, safe, and natural system of recovery. Homeopathic practitioners use homeopathic remedies to recover, decrease, or eliminate a variety of illness and conditions. Homeopathy works with your body to reduce symptoms, restore itself, and enhance your overall health. When appropriately utilized, and with attention to the kind of therapy, it is extremely safe to use, even with pets and small children. Mindset, past and present traumas, and limiting belief systems are some of the biggest barriers to healing, so much in fact that gene expression and biological ‘engines’ of the human body can change for the worse because of it.
In the many years, we have been working in the field of holistic medicine, helping people who have tried everything else with no success or little success, we have discovered how great of an impact our thoughts, beliefs, and past and present trauma, and chronic stress can be to the human body, mind, and spirit.
The rate of recovery and healing for those who place emphasis on creating new neurological pathways to imprint new and healthy mindsets and belief systems in how they perceive themselves and the world around them is greatly improved when the psychological aspect of mindset and integration of mind, body, the spirit is addressed through repatterning of the mind and body neurology.
By removing barriers discovered from traumas, mindset, and conscious/unconscious patterns that are not congruent for healing, health, and vitality, you set yourself up for the best outcomes in your healing journey. Healing only occurs when the physical, emotional, and mental barriers to healing are removed.
Therefore we incorporate mind, body, spirit integration work into our programs and in doing so, we see exponential increases in positive outcomes with our clients. We have put together the most comprehensive ‘whole person’ approach in the world, and this is why our results are so successful.
Our Emotional Processing, Stress Release, & Neurological Repatterning coaches work with you to create new neurological connections, anchor new neurology, and habits, and show you how to become aware of any conscious or unconscious belief systems that may be holding you back from healing and total health.
You are welcome to try one or two appointments to see what you think. We typically recommend a minimum of 6 sessions to make an accurate assessment of how this type of modality is working for you.
Here are some of the modalities our Emotional Processing, Stress Release, & Neurological Repatterning coaches use for brain and body repatterning:
Breathwork is more than just a simple exercise of intentional breathing. Specialized breathwork techniques are used to facilitate major transformation and healing by encompassing a wide range of therapeutic practices that are extremely powerful in providing immediate relief for pulling people out of fight or flight (the amygdala hijack we teach about in Part 2 of our Mastering Trauma Masterclass).
This vagus nerve activation through breath work activates the rest/digest (parasympathetic nervous system), stimulates healing, reduces blood pressure, reduces the cortisol stress response, regulates hormone and blood glucose activity, and heart rate variability (the biological stress response). It rewires the body for self-regulation of the nervous system in a manner that optimizes the body and creates resilience in times of stress.
Yoga breath therapy allows you to disconnect from the mind chatter, mind racing, and negative self-talk and reconnect with your body your energy. From this elevated state of awareness, you are able to facilitate healing, growth, and expansion. And if you are looking for some expansion of your body/mind/spirit awareness, then this type of breathwork can be nourishing and can facilitate the next layer of peace, love, gratitude, connection, clarity, and insights.
In the many years, we have been working in the field of holistic medicine, helping people who have tried everything else with no success or little success, we have discovered how great of a damaging impact our thoughts, beliefs, and past and present trauma, and chronic stress (the fight or flight response) can be to the human body, mind, and spirit.
By becoming aware of how to regulate our own nervous system, and resolve traumas, mindset, and conscious/unconscious patterns that are not congruent for healing, health, and vitality, you set yourself up for the best outcomes in your healing journey. Healing only occurs when the physical, emotional, and mental barriers to healing are removed.
