Could Your Own Voice Be the Medicine You’ve Been Missing?

By

What if your body already knows what it needs to heal, and it’s been trying to tell you all along?

Not with words.

But with tension in your chest. Tightness in your throat. Restless sleep. A sense of pressure with no clear source.

What if your nervous system doesn’t need more fixing… but more freedom?

And what if the ground beneath your feet, quite literally, holds part of the answer?

This summer, my husband, Greg, and I returned to one of our favorite sacred places—deep in the Uinta National Forest in Utah, over 10,000 feet above sea level, accessible only by 4×4 vehicle. With us were some close friends and one new companion experiencing this kind of wild, unplugged stillness for the first time.

That high up, the air is cleaner. The distractions fall away. But something else happens too, something biological.

When you stand barefoot on the Earth, your body absorbs free electrons from the ground. Charged particles that neutralize inflammation, regulate circadian rhythms, and calm the nervous system. It’s called grounding or earthing, and it’s not just spiritual; it’s science.

That evening, as the stars emerged above us and the fire flickered low, we took off our shoes. We stepped onto the cool forest floor, barefoot and present. Skin to soil. No filters. No roles. Just bodies in communion with the Earth.

And that’s when the invitation came.

It wasn’t my first time practicing what I call Primal Voice, a conscious, embodied sound release that I learned years ago and continue to practice, not just in my own life, but also at our Modern Holistic Health retreats.

We create sacred space for this kind of deep release. Space where people can scream, sob, howl, and speak truths they’ve never had permission to say out loud. We do it in nature. Barefoot. Grounded. Supported. Safe. And what happens there is unforgettable.

This time, high up in the mountains in a magical meadow of soft grasses surrounded by majestic pines under the Utah sky, I turned to our new friend and asked, “Have you ever let yourself scream, not in anger, but to release?”

He hadn’t. Most people haven’t.

I invited him to let go. “I’ll do it with you,” I said.

And so we did. Together, we walked just a few feet into the meadow, still in the extended light of the campfire. Barefoot on the Earth, shoulders open, chests lifted. We breathed deeply and let it go—sound, pressure, emotion. Not to impress. Not to perform. But to release.

He followed, hesitantly at first. Then again. And again. Each time deeper. Freer. Louder.

What we let out wasn’t just volume. It was history. It was the unsaid. It was the stagnant, stuck energy that finally had permission to move.

I’ll never forget the look on his face afterward.

His whole body softened. His breath slowed. And his eyes—once busy, scanning, uncertain—became still. His face, once stiff, was now relaxed, and the corners of his mouth slightly curved up as if saying goodbye to what once was.

“I didn’t know how much I needed that,” he said. His voice now quieter. Slower.

“My mind finally stopped racing. I feel calm and relaxed. Present. It’s like I dropped back into myself. Like I could feel the peace that was already here, but I just couldn’t get to it before.”

That’s the kind of experience I’ve seen over and over again—especially at our retreats, where people come not just to heal, but to remember what freedom feels like.

What Would Happen If You Tried?

Can you imagine yourself barefoot in your own backyard, or in a park near your home, no shoes, no screens, just you and the Earth?

What might it feel like to let your bare feet touch the ground, to feel the cool grass or soil on your feet, and to let the buzz of daily life begin to fade… and then to make a sound your body has been holding in?

What would it be like to feel safe enough to let go?

While it’s the most amazing experience to practice primal voice in the middle of the national forest, you don’t have to be in the mountains to experience release through grounding and sound. You just need a little space and a willingness to meet yourself there.

Could your voice become the very tool that brings you back to your body?

Could sound be what finally moves what talk and thinking never could?

Are you ready to remember that you’re allowed to feel? To express? To release?

If your answer is yes, but you don’t have access to jump in your 4X4 to head to the mountains, or you’re ready to try it on your own, outside of the container of a retreat, I’ve got some ways you can try it on your own.

What you do need is space and permission to express yourself. Start by getting outdoors, whether in your yard or a nearby park. Take your shoes off and get grounded. If you have the space, take a walk barefoot. If your space is limited, stand in one place and face the sun with your eyes closed. Feel the energy of the sun move through your body as you allow yourself to breathe slowly and deeply into your lower belly. Feel the sun on your face and the earth beneath your feet. Pay attention not to the voices or stories in your head, but to how it feels to have the sun on your face and the ground beneath your feet. Feel your breath as it moves through your body. Listen to the sounds around you. Get present.

Primal voice

If you want to give primal voice a try, you can do it in your own home, or at a park with some friends… After all, if you’re all doing it together, people will get curious and might even want to join!

If you prefer to try it at home but need to keep the volume down, simply practice your primal voice by pressing your face into a pillow while you stand up. Open your mouth wide and allow yourself to feel your primal voice moving through you. If your body wants to move around, shake, shiver, or even hit your pillow, try it! Witness how the intelligence of your own body will show you how it wants to move that stuck energy out. Trust your body! It will know what to do!

Buzzing or Humming Breath

Another way to move energy through your body using sound is to practice the buzzing or humming breath. Simply close your eyes. Inhale through the nose, taking a full breath, then as you start to exhale, do it with a long “mmm” or “zzz” sound… All the way to the end of your breath… and then push it just a little farther to get every ounce of breath out of you. Let it vibrate through your chest and out of your throat. Feel it settle you. Again, if your body wants to shake, vibrate, flail, stomp, or squat. Trust your body’s intelligence because it knows you are allowing it to release and it’s showing you how it wants to do it… Trust yourself!

Gargle with water

Another powerful way to move energy with sound, while also activating your parasympathetic nervous system, is to gargle loudly with water. Doing the longest and loudest gargle you possibly can before spitting the water out. Try it!

These subtle yet powerful practices send a message to your nervous system: you’re safe… you can soften… you can return.

Introducing A Sacred Gathering in 2026

For years, I’ve felt the call to bring women together in an intimate, transformational way. In 2026, this vision will become a reality.

We’ll gather for a soul-nurturing retreat—designed for those ready to evolve, release, and rise into a new level of being. This won’t be a vacation. It will be a reactivation—a remembering of your inner healer.

If your heart says yes and you’d like to be among the first to receive details, complete this short form. The space will be limited, and early responders will be prioritized when applications open.
