Home Remedies for UTI

The Best Home Remedies for UTI listed in this article will not only eliminate the bacteria causing UTI but also reduce its chance of ever-recurring again. UTI (Urinary tract infection) is an infection commonly affecting adult women. It is typically inflicted upon sexually active women aged between 18-24 by organisms that are too small to be seen by the naked eye. These organisms include viruses, bacteria, and fungi.

Certain bacteria have the ability to defy the body’s natural defense system as they attach themselves to the lining of the urinary tract. Hence, inhabiting the Urethra, bladder, and kidneys. E.coli bacterium residing in the bowel, vaginal cavities, urethral opening, and urinary tract is found to be the prominent perpetrator in a majority of UTI cases.

That is not to say there aren’t other significant pathogens responsible for UTI as well. Pathogens like Proteus mirabilisStaphylococcus saprophyticusStaphylococcus epidermidis, and Klebsiella pneumonia can all cause UTI in adults.

The Symptoms of UTI in Adults may include:

1. Muscle Aches

2. Abdominal Pain

3. Urine that appears cloudy

4. Urine that appears red or bright pink.

5. Pelvic pain in women

6. Strong smelling urine

7. Pain when urinating

8. Confusion or Delirium

Home Remedies for UTI (2)

Typically, a Urinary tract infection can be cured in two or three days with the help of some antibiotics. However, as antibiotics have become the most conventional treatment for such an infection, the bacteria have shown resilience to the effects of antibiotics. Hence, relief may not be found no matter how many days the suffering individual stays on conventional medicine.

Thankfully, there are effective alternative remedies to fight and eliminate antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and the best part is these remedies can all be adopted from the comfort of your home.

Best Home Remedies For UTI

1. Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a vitamin that the body cannot produce by itself; it has to be procured from outside sources. Apart from its common benefits to the body, it helps in inhibiting the growth of E. coli bacterium in the body. Researchers have found that daily vitamin C intake for three months was able to reduce urinary infection and improve the health level of gestating women.

2. Garlic

Raw garlic contains allicin, which has many antimicrobial activities. Allicin has been found to exhibit potent antibacterial activity against a wide range of bacteria that have developed a resistance to antibiotics, including the multidrug-resistant strain of E.coli.

Garlic also has antifungal properties that help cure yeast infections.

3. D- Mannose

As mentioned, most bacteria escape the body’s natural defenses by attaching themselves to the walls of the urinary tract. D- Mannose, on the other hand, is a sugar found typically in glucose that can prevent certain bacteria from sticking to the walls.

In a 2014 study published by the World Journal of Urology, 308 women with a history of UTI were tested. They were divided into three groups. One that received D-Mannose powder with water for six months, the second group received an antibiotic called nitrofurantoin, and the third received no treatment.

At the conclusion of the study, it was found that 98 women out of the 308 women were found to have recurrent UTI. 15 in the group that received the D-Mannose powder, 21 in the group that received nitrofurantoin, and 62 in the group that were given no treatment.

It was concluded that D mannose powder significantly reduced the risk of recurring UTI in women.

4. Staying Hydrated

Staying hydrated is one of the best home remedies for UTI. Not drinking enough fluids in the day has many dire consequences for the body, one of them being UTI. Drinking water or fluid helps flush down bacteria from the body’s system. At least one whole glass of water after every meal is recommended to flush down bacteria that can result in UTI effectively.

5. Stay Dry

Women should take extra precautions to stay clean and dry. Wipe from front to back after a bowel movement to reduce the risk of UTI. It is recommended to wear loose-fitting clothes and underwear to keep the Urethra dry. Moisture on the body is the perfect place for notorious bacteria and other organisms to fester and grow; thus, it is fundamental to stay dry and clean.

6. Urinate Often

Do not delay the urge to urinate. Urinating often ensures that a bacterium does not remain in the urine that is contained in the bladder. It is also highly recommended to urinate right after sexual intercourse to flush out the bacteria that may have entered the Urethra.

7. Avoid Spermicides

A 1996 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine has indicated that UTI is more common in sexually active women, especially in those with recent sexual intercourse associated with the use of a diaphragm with spermicide. Spermicide can increase irritation that allows bacteria to grow. It is highly recommended to use lubricated condoms that don’t include spermicides.

8. Cranberry

Although there is limited evidence to Cranberry’s effectiveness in eliminating UTI, it, however, can be used as a preventative measure against UTI. Studies on animals have shown that cranberries inhibited the growth of infection-causing bacteria like E.coli, which is the most common bacteria seen in urinary tract infections.

9. Probiotics

As most bacteria causing UTI are antibiotic-resistant, the most effective remedy in fighting the infection becomes probiotics. Antibiotics, although helpful, have shown tendencies to destroy the bacterial flora of the body, which is essential in preventing the growth of illness-causing microorganisms.

Probiotics help support the body’s natural flora that forms the body’s line of defense against bacteria. Eating fermented food rich in probiotics like kimchi, kefir, raw cheese, etc. can help in defending the flora that defends your body.

10. Clove Oil

Clove oil has potent antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiviral factors. It should be taken internally for two weeks; it is highly recommended that its consumption is done under expert supervision. Clove oil is also known to have anti-inflammation properties that help relieve pain and promote healing.

11. Myrrh Oil

Myrrh Oil also has antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. In the distant past, it was used to heal wounds and fight external infection. Myrrh oil can be taken topically, rubbed into the skin. Its internal consumption, however, should not be done without expert supervision.

Final Thoughts
