Perceiving these occurrences as negative or dangerous triggers a sequence of biochemical changes within us, altering both our neurological and bioenergetic systems.
1. We experience an emotionally charged event.
2. Our bodies go into fight or flight mode, unleashing a torrent of emotions and biochemical reactions.
3. Our rational thinking, guided by the frontal lobe, attempts to make sense of what’s happening. However, the fight or flight center of our brains (the amygdala) overrides our ability to gain new insights and wisdom from the experience.
4. In this heightened state, our brains and bodies struggle to return to a state of calm. As a result, our perception of events becomes distorted, affecting our view of ourselves and the world around us.

The frontal lobe takes charge of critical functions such as reasoning, judgment, personality, and awareness. On the other hand, your amygdala, often referred to as the primitive brain, has a crucial role as well. In response, it triggers the well-known fight or flight response, activating stress hormones that rapidly alter your brain, metabolism, thyroid, and overall stress levels. This process is commonly referred to as an “Amygdala Hijack.”

Breathwork is more than just a simple exercise of intentional breathing. This vagus nerve activation through breath work activates the rest/digest (parasympathetic nervous system), stimulates healing, reduces blood pressure, reduces the cortisol stress response, regulates hormone and blood glucose activity, and heart rate variability (the biological stress response).
