Chicken Pox is the common name given to the Varicella-Zoster virus that causes intensely itchy red blisters on the skin. Although the virus typically affects children, it can also attack adults who have never had the virus and therefore are not immune to it.
In most cases, chickenpox isn’t a threat as the rashes start disappearing within two weeks. However, there have been cases where the symptoms stubbornly linger for months and cause severe complications like scarring and pneumonia.
1. As chickenpox is a disease that occurs only once in a lifetime, not having chickenpox means not having immunity to the virus.
2. As the virus is highly contagious, having close contact with the ailing person can lead to the development of chickenpox
3. Never been vaccinated for chickenpox
4. Being an infant of a mother who hasn’t had chickenpox in her lifetime.
For those suffering from the symptoms of chickenpox longer than usual, there is the option of natural holistic remedies. These remedies can be found in a place as convenient as a kitchen cabinet and work effectively in alleviating the discomforting symptoms of this virus, which include itching, scabbing, infections, scarring, and fever.
The gel produced from Aloe Vera leaf soothes and calms inflamed itchy skin; hence, you will find it to be the key ingredient of many ointments and antiseptic creams. It moisturizes the skin, and with the help of anti-inflammatory properties, reduces itching.
To extract aloe Vera gel, slice the leaf sideways, and scoop out the gel that is found inside. Apply this gel on the rashes at least 2-3 times a day for better results.
The remedy is safe and can also be used with infants.
Baking Soda is known to be anti-microbial in nature and helps the body fight infections successfully. A baking soda bath can soothe the itches and ease the feeling of inflamed rashes on the skin.
A cup of baking soda soaked in a bathtub of warm water for 10-12 minutes will accomplish the task of soothing an itching body. Additionally, you can also add antiseptic liquids to the warm water.
Who knew oatmeal had more crucial benefits than just being a wholesome breakfast option. Oatmeal baths have been tested remedies in healing people with chickenpox. Oatmeal helps to cleanse and soothe the infected skin by acting as a moisturizing agent.
To effectively implement this remedy, you will need 2 cups of oats, 4 cups of water, a cloth bag, warm water, and a bathtub.
1. Grind the oatmeal, and then soak them in four cups of water for a few minutes.
2. Later, put this mixture in a tightly sealed cloth bag.
3. Place the bag in warm water and let it soak for a couple of minutes.
Taking an oatmeal bath every day will reduce inflammation to a great extent.
Both brown and apple cider vinegar provides instant relief from itching. Vinegars anti-microbial properties help stop any infections that may arise from the symptoms of chickenpox. It also helps in reducing scarring and healing marks and lesions developing on the body.
Add vinegar of your choice into the warm bath water and let your body soak in it for around 15 minutes. After the bath, rinse your body with plain water.
As vinegar can be too pungent, you can add two drops of tea or lavender oil to the warm water and rinse. Adding tea tree and lavender can also make your eyes feel heavy as they are known to induce sleep.
Essential oils like coconut, lavender, tea tree oil, etc. possess properties that specifically target the symptoms of chickenpox. Coconut oil relieves itching by nourishing and hydrating the skin.
Lavender oil is a potent anti-microbial agent that prevents infection and soothes inflamed skin. Same can be said of tea tree and eucalyptus oil.
To apply them properly, blend ½ a cup of coconut oil with 1 teaspoon of lavender or tea tree oil. To see quick results, apply them 2-3 times a day.
Lime juice is popularly known to be rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. It is with the help of these properties that Lime acts as an astringent that quickens the healing process and reduces scars and rashes caused by chickenpox.
Dilute the extracted lime juice and apply it on the rashes with the help of cotton. Leave it on for around 5 minutes and then clean the area with a wet washcloth, for fast results, apply it twice a day.
One should be cautious of lime juice before applying it as it can mildly sting the affected area.
Herbal teas like lemon balm, basil, and chamomile regulate the gastrointestinal system and boost immunity. They are also packed with the essential antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that help in quickly recuperating from chickenpox.
You can use herbal tea with the added flavor of honey or lemon juice to lift the blandness of its taste. For better results, drink at least 2 cups of tea every day.
Vitamin E oils are known to hydrate the skin and remove dead and darkened skin cells off the body. This vitamin also acts powerful antioxidants that heal rashes and relieve the skin from inflammation.
If used in the initial stages of chickenpox, they can help avoid the formation of visible scars on the skin. You can purchase Vitamin E oils from a nearby store, and apply it on the chickenpox rashes and blisters. Using this oil 2-3 times a day will do the desired trick of quickly relieving the symptoms of chickenpox.
Honey is the best remedy for healing itchy sores and lesions. It not only reduces the urge to scratch the infected area but also reduces scarring on the skin.
Honey should be applied on the skin affected by chickenpox and left for around 20 minutes. After the wait is over, rinse the honey off or wipe it gently with a wet cloth, for desired results, apply honey at least twice a day.
Ginger is one spice that has a multitude of health benefits on the body. Ginger has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties that help in healing scabs and rashes, thus reducing itches effectively.
Ginger powder can be consumed with both warm water and tea every day to see the results.
Green peas are rich in vitamins like vitamin B6, Vitamins C, and folic acid. They help fight inflammation, thus soothing the skin from itches and rashes. The consumption of green peas also dramatically reduces the urge to scratch and decimates the chances of scarring.
To apply the peas effectively, first, boil them and grind them into a paste. Apply this paste gently on the rashes and leave it one for an hour before taking a warm bath.
Chickenpox can take its sweet time to heal, but the home remedies mentioned above can take care of all the discomforting symptoms of chickenpox. Along with the above remedies, it is also essential to maintain a healthy diet to build the immunity needed to tackle chickenpox.
1. Foods like carrot, fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, green vegetables like kale, broccoli, spinach, and grass-fed beef, lamb, and chicken are all recommended to boost the body’s immunity.
2. On the other hand, Food like chocolate, caffeinated drinks, salty Food, nuts, and fruits like grapes, blackberries, blueberries, and oranges should be avoided.
