Principles of a Holistic Practitioner

Holistic practitioners understand the intrinsic connections between the body, mind, and spirit and their approach to healing is that of a ‘whole’ person approach.  The holistic practitioner integrates alternative and traditional therapies to address and correct the underlying causes of disease, and most importantly, to promote optimum health. This approach of holistic health is specified as the unimpeded and unlimited free flow of life force energy through the body, mind, and spirit. True health is not the just absence of disease of symptoms, it is optimization of health and life.

Holistic medicine approaches include safe and appropriate modalities for identifying and eliminating the underlying causes of chronic diseases and other health related issues. It consists of an analysis of the physical, nutritional, environmental, genetic, emotional, and spiritual life elements. In addition, Holistic medicine focuses on personal education, responsibility, and active participation in the healing process.

The Principles of Holistic Practitioner :

• Searches for the underlying causes of the illness.  They understand that treating the symptom isn’t addressing the root cause of the health issue.

• Holistic practitioners expend as much effort in establishing what kind of person has an illness as they do in establishing what the underlying cause of the illness or disease is. In other words, is the illness caused solely by an external factor such as an environmental toxin the person might be exposed to or is there also an element of self limiting belief (perhaps due to long term stress or an emotional trauma) – and internal factor that is also contributing to the illness or disease in the individual.

• The holistic practitioner fully understands that people either pay for the sickness or they pay for their health.  Prevention is preferable to treatment and is typically more cost-effective and long sustaining. Ultimately the holistic model of health is the most cost-effective method to achieve long term sustainable health and vitality.

• Illness is considered to be a manifestation of a dysfunction that affects the whole person, not as an isolated ‘condition’ or ‘disease’ that is only problematic to an organ system.  For example, is thyroid dysfunction really a true thyroid issue or is the thyroid dysfunction secondary to a hormonal  imbalance caused by endrocrine (hormone) disrupting foods or toxins?

• A major determinant of healing is patient participation, responsibility, and mindset.  Actively participating in their own healing by creating healthy changes to their whole self (mindset, habits, and lifestyle choices) is paramount to success for anyone wanting to take a holistic approach to healing and maintaining their health.

• The ideal approach to healing addresses the needs, awareness, desires, and insight of the patient as well as those of the health practitioner.

• Holistic doctors encourage their clients to learn, understand, and evoke the healing power of mindset.  The human mind is capable of manifesting thoughts that also invoke emotion.  Learning to reframe negative and self limiting beliefs that include hostility, shame, greed, depression, prolonged worry, anger, and grief with those of love, humor, hope, interest, and opportunity not only changes the physiology of the body (the body chemistry), it literally changes our own genetic expression and allows our bodies and minds to heal.

• Optimal health is a lot more than the absence of sickness. It is the mindful pursuit of the highest qualities of the physical, environmental, psychological, emotional, spiritual, and social aspects of the human experience.
